The Pension Provision Collective Agreement (ATV – Tarifvertrag Altersversorgung) addresses the interests of salaried scientific employees with temporary employment contracts. Employers and employees, both can benefit from the respective special arrangement.
Scientific employees are typically employed for a short period of time and often unable to accumulate the 60 months of insurance (qualifying period), which is a prerequisite for acquiring a vested entitlement to pension benefits in the VBL compulsory insurance scheme (VBLklassik).
Employees with a short-term scientific position in academia or research may therefore opt out of the VBLklassik. Employers then are obliged to establish a retirement provision plan in VBLextra for Researchers instead. The benefit: These employees acquire a pension entitlement without having to meet the qualifying period requirement of VBLklassik.
